Is our daughter... barking?

I walked towards the living room, hearing unusual sounds from my 15-month old.
"Arf, arp, arp arp!" high piched squeels abounded.

"Is our daugther... barking?" I asked my husband as I entered the room.

"No, she's just making little noises as she reads to herself." We both looked over at E, sitting in her toy corner, with a book perched on her legs. "Wait... is that.. the _dog_ book?!"

"Yes, yes it is. The book where almost every word on every page is a dog barking? Yep."

So... yes, our daughter really WAS barking. Once she realized we were being entertained by it, she spent the next five minutes or so pointing at pictures and "arf"ing.

If you, too, would like to teach your toddler to speak dog, you can pick this book up at your local library or book store:
Doggies: A counting and barking book by Sandra Boynton.
I recommend it for anyone who wants to hear their child carry on a "normal" conversation with the neighborhood pooch before they can speak.

Ph.D.

Yesterday I successfully defended my dissertation. Two of my committee members were on a conference call for the defense, and somehow I managed to hang up on them twice durring the hour and 30 minutes. Nevertheless, they decided that, even if I could not handle telephone technology, I still merited a Ph.D. Or perhaps they were simply tired of me sending them new drafts of the same research. Either way, I'll take it.

Lots of Flavor, Little Effort

L went out strawberry picking this week, and the box of strawberries she came back with made me start thinking about pies. With L and E sick (and me only sorta sick) the pie making duties fell to me. Normally I don't do "baking" but this recipie could hardly be called baking, anyway.

It was way easy to make. I used a pre-made crust, the strawberries only needed washing and cutting, and the glaze used only a few minutes of stove-time. The result was the pie-ish sort of thing you see in the picture. Not the most amazing pie I ever tasted, but very good considering the quick preparation.
Oh, and if you don't count the crust, it is vegan.
